Lakota Optimist Club Programs

  Student of the Month
Juniors from both Lakota High Schools are eligible to apply for the 'Student of the Month' program at their High Schools.  The Optimists look for overall excellence in the winners.  Students are judged on academic
achievement as well as High School Activities, Church and Community Activities, and other experiences.
Senior of the Year - From the pool of 'Student of the Month' winners will come the 'Student of the Year' awards.  Near the end of their senior year, our previous year's 'Student of the Month' winners are asked to apply for the 'Studnet of the Year' award.  There is a winner from both Lakota East and Lakota West.  The winners are presented with a $750.00 scholarship from the Lakota Optimist Club.

Oratorical Contest

Oratorical Contest - This speaking competition is for 7th and 8th grade students from our middle schools.  Students write and present 4 to 5 minute speeches on a predetermined topic.  The students are graded on their content and presentation skills by a panel of judges who are spread among the audience.  Competition is not only at the local level, but also at a regional level. Ultimately, a state wide winner is determined.  In 1999 the Ohio State Champion was Grant Simpson who was sponsored by our club,

Run for Youth
This October Event is a 1.5 mile Run for Elementary School age children.  The Lakota Optimist Club wants the 'Run for Youth' to be an event in which all students feel comfortable participating.   We have designed the event to reward participation as well as our numerous grade level winners.  In 1999, we gave medals to the first three boys and first three girls in each elementary grade (1-6).  The Lakota Elementary Schools also competed in a boys and girls race that will be scored like a cross country race.  The winning schools were presented with a trophy recognizing their excellence
