Lakota Optimists Name Teens of the Month Abby Smardon of Lakota West and Aris Yowell of Lakota East were selected by the Lakota Optimist Club as Junior Teenagers of the Month for April. Abby, daughter of Art and Carolyn Smardon, represents a unique blend of academic excellence and community involvement, while still being a very accomplished varsity athlete. To highlight her school activities, Ms. Smardon is a member of the French Club, Mu Alpha Theta math honorary, D.E.C.A., as well as being a leader on the Lakota West Lady Firebird golf team. To further underscore her leadership abilities, Abby has served as captain of her varsity golf team for three straight years. Her community involvement includes being a volunteer for Reach Out Lakota, participating in Young Life and the Interact Club. Despite a very hectic schedule of school and community activities, Abby maintains an A+ grade point average and is ranked among the very best in her class. Her hobbies include golf, dancing and travel. Aris, daughter of David and Diane Yowell, is a young lady is accomplished not only in the classroom, but also in the area fine arts. She is a refreshing blend of academic talent and theatrical ability. While maintaining an "A" grade point average, Aris also has starred as the female lead in two recent theater productions at Lakota East. She is a member of the Lakota East renown "Show Choir" and has been recognized by numerous school recognized leadership awards. Aris is an active member of the Lakota East student government where she has "stepped up" on numerous occasions to chair projects in need of leadership. She has volunteered her time and talents to Hillandale Nursing Home, organizing a food and clothing drive for the needy and taught technique to Tomahawk cheerleaders. Her hobbies include an avid pursuit of singing and dancing. She is currently attempting to master the finer points of jazz and tap dancing.
